Riyadh – May 25, 2025
The International Astronomy Center has announced that Eid al-Adha 2025 is expected to fall on Friday, June 6, in most Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia.

According to the Center, Wednesday, May 28, will likely be the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 AH, based on the expected visibility of the crescent moon on the evening of Tuesday, May 27.

Moon Sighting Possibility

The center shared a visibility map showing that:

  • Crescent cannot be seen in red-colored regions (moon sets before the sun).
  • In blue areas, the moon can be seen with a telescope only.
  • In green areas, the moon can be seen with the naked eye, especially under clear skies.
  • Most of the Americas will have the clearest view by eye, while Europe, West Asia, and Africa may require telescopes.

Visibility in Saudi Arabia and Nearby Cities

  • In Makkah, the moon will set 39 minutes after sunset, making it visible with a telescope.
  • In Abu Dhabi, the moon sets 38 minutes after sunset, also requiring a telescope.
  • Cairo, Amman, and Rabat will experience similar conditions, with sighting possible under ideal weather but challenging without tools.

Scientific Background

The center explained that a crescent moon typically becomes visible to the naked eye when it is at least 15 hours old and remains in the sky for more than 29 minutes after sunset. However, visibility also depends on angular distance from the sun and other astronomical factors.

Summary

  • First day of Dhu al-Hijjah: Wednesday, May 28, 2025
  • Expected date of Eid al-Adha: Friday, June 6, 2025
  • Crescent moon visibility: Likely via telescope in most of the Islamic world
