Bruno Fernandes Chooses Legacy Over Lucrative Saudi Move

Bruno Fernandes

Riyadh – June 2025
In an era where massive paydays often rewrite careers, Bruno Fernandes just chose something different legacy.

The Manchester United captain has confirmed he rejected a mega offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal, despite being reportedly offered £700,000 per week. The potential deal would have been worth over £100 million, but Fernandes opted to stay in Europe, citing his desire to “stay at the highest level.”

“Money Isn’t Everything”

Speaking to Portuguese media, Fernandes revealed the president of Al-Hilal personally called to express interest. Discussions followed. Numbers surfaced. Family conversations happened.

But in the end, footballing ambition won.

“I simply want to stay at the highest level,” Fernandes said. “I’m still passionate about the sport and want to keep playing in top competitions.”

Loyalty in a Shifting Market

The Saudi Pro League has seen a flurry of high-profile signings in recent seasons. But Fernandes’ refusal is a rare statement of loyalty and personal ambition.

He credited conversations with Rúben Amorim and strong family support as key factors. He also praised Al-Hilal’s professionalism, noting that the president was “a fantastic person.”

Despite the emotional and financial ease of relocating especially with fellow Portuguese players like Rúben Neves and João Cancelo already in Saudi Fernandes stood firm.

A Signal to United and the World

The timing is critical. Manchester United is facing pressure after a challenging season. Many saw Fernandes’ departure as inevitable. Instead, he’s doubling down on his commitment to lead the club through recovery.

Even Gary Neville, speaking to Sky Sports, emphasized the significance:

“It says a lot about him as a person. He wants to fight through it. That’s real leadership.”

Saudi Clubs Still a Major Force

While Fernandes said no, the Saudi Pro League remains an active player in the global transfer market. Clubs like Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ittihad are still expected to make major signings this summer.

But Fernandes’ stance shows that not every player is ready to trade Europe’s top-tier football for big contracts at least not yet.
