Baghdad – May 17, 2025
The Iraqi government has officially addressed the surprise departure of Emir Of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, from the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad.
Government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi confirmed that the exit was pre-planned and coordinated with Iraqi officials. He denied any claims of disagreement or tension.
Not a Walkout — It Was Scheduled
In a public statement, Al-Awadi explained:
“The Emir left according to a set schedule agreed upon earlier with Iraqi authorities. His exit had nothing to do with politics or protocol issues.”
He also noted that it’s normal for some leaders to deliver their summit speech in writing or through delegation.
“Sheikh Tamim gave his speech formally before leaving,” Al-Awadi added.
Qatari Delegation Still Present
Though the Emir departed early, the Qatari delegation remained in Baghdad and continued representing the country at the summit.
Al-Awadi emphasized:
“There is no sign of tension or dissatisfaction from either the Qatari side or any other Arab delegation.”
What Happened on the Sidelines
Before leaving, Sheikh Tamim held a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
According to statements from both governments, the two leaders discussed:
- Bilateral cooperation
- Investment and development opportunities
- Regional and global political issues
The meeting was described as positive and constructive.
Summit Continues in Baghdad
The 34th Arab Summit hosted by Iraq brought together Arab heads of state and representatives from international bodies. Topics on the table included:
- Support for Syria
- Ceasefire in Gaza
- Political solutions for Sudan
Despite the Emir’s early departure, Qatar remains fully involved in summit discussions.
