Baghdad – May 16, 2025
The 34th Arab League Summit opened today in Baghdad, with Syria’s future and Gaza high on the agenda. Leaders and officials from across the Arab world gathered to discuss key regional challenges.
Syria Back in Focus
The summit’s draft resolution calls for a comprehensive political process in Syria. The Arab League aims to support a dialogue that includes all groups and sects within Syrian society.
The resolution emphasizes the respect for Syria’s diversity and the need for national unity, peace, and reconstruction. Arab leaders agree that Syria’s political future must come through dialogue, not external pressure.
Gaza and Palestine
On Palestine, the summit strongly opposed any forced displacement of Palestinians. Leaders demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the end of all hostilities, and serious steps toward a two-state solution.
The Iraqi President condemned ongoing Israeli attacks, calling Gaza’s situation a “humanitarian catastrophe.” The Spanish Prime Minister, also attending, said:
“Gaza is bleeding. We must act and recognize both Palestinian and Israeli states.”
Sudan and Regional Stability
The summit also addressed the crisis in Sudan. A draft resolution urges a political solution, not war, and a return to the Jeddah process to resolve the conflict. Arab leaders warned against using force to settle internal disputes.
